SMS has kicked off a new leadership group called REPS: Raiders Empowering Peers.

“SMS Raider Reps Ambassadors play a vital role in fostering supportive and engaging school culture,” SMS Principal Angel Perez said. “They are student leaders who represent their school and serve as role models for their peers.”

The group, which is co-sponsored by teachers Mitzi Miller and Brooke Weete, allows students an opportunity for student voice and ownership.

“We wanted the group to help improve school culture and peer-to-peer interactions,” Miller said.”

According to Perez, students who were interested in being a part of REPS met with the sponsors to gain information and learn more about the criteria and the intent of the Rep Ambassadors. The qualities the SMS team considered were: were leadership abilities, positive attitudes, good academic standing and strong interpersonal skills.

“Teacher recommendations were based on character, leadership abilities and contributions of the school community,” Perez said. “SMS wanted a strong diverse group to represent different backgrounds, perspectives and interests. These ambassadors will demonstrate a willingness to commit to activities, including community events, community service and leadership roles on campus. The goal is to ensure the ambassadors are making a positive impact on their school and community.”

Ultimately, the group will help support SMS by providing guidance helping to develop a culture of respect and understanding at SMS.

“Our SMS REP Ambassadors will be empowered to serve as a positive role models, showcase good behavior, responsibility, and a commitment to academic and personal growth,” Perez said.
