SHS Offers New Course Offerings

New course offerings that will start in the fall of 2024 at SHS will provide students with scheduling flexibility, a robust list of new language options and exciting new Advanced Placement, Dual-Credit and CTE courses.

“We have heard the feedback from students, parents and our community and felt it was the right time to add some high school courses that would provide our students with flexibility and opportunity for advancement,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jake Duce said.

SHS Language Options

Currently, SHS students are required to obtain two language credits in either Spanish or American Sign Language.

Beginning in the fall of 2024, SHS students may gain language credit in four ways:

  • Two credits in either Spanish or ASL

  • Two credits in French, using an online course at SHS

  • Students who speak a native language may obtain credit by exam. SHS has a list of 46 languages from which native speakers can earn credit (courses can be viewed at this link: https://avantassessment.com/#languageList.  Students must demonstrate proficiency through a district-approved assessment.

  • Students who wish to become proficient in a language other than English that is not offered at SHS, may obtain credit by taking the course through a district-approved learning platform and then demonstrating proficiency through a district-approved assessment by July 1 of their junior year of high school.

SHS Advanced Placement and Dual Credit Options

Currently, SHS has a robust Dual Credit program and has added Advanced Placement courses to its high school course offerings. SISD is excited to announce new course offerings to supplement these initiatives, starting in the fall of 2024:

  • Advanced Placement Human Geography

  • Advanced Placement Cyber Security (also a Career and Technical Education course - students receive certification in this pathway)

  • Dual-Credit Video Game Design - (also a Career and Technical Education pathway - students complete an 18-hour course certification in this pathway)

Additional New Course

SHS will also offer Food Science beginning the fall of 2024, as well. This course will be considered a Career and Technical Education course as well as a Science course.
